Visitors enjoy a leisurely stroll through the Staten Island Botanical Gardens

Within the grounds of the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, The Staten Island Botanical
Garden is a 53 acre natural woodland with over 20 specimen gardens.

Founded in 1977, The Staten Island Botanical Garden is constantly evolving and offers
many classes for school age children, which afford a unique learning experience
combining horticulture, history and art.

The Staten Island Botanical Garden has created a number of gardens which include
representations from particular periods along with contemporary styles. Highlights
include the Garden of Healing which features the World Trade Center Educational
Tribute, the Italian Garden modeled after Florence Italy’s Villa Gamberaia, the White
Garden inspired by Vita Sackville-West’s famous garden in Sissinghurst, England and
the Connie Gretz Secret Garden modeled after Frances Hodgson Burnett’s children’s
classic complete with a child-sized castle and a maze.

The New York Chinese Scholar's Garden at Snug Harbor

The Staten Island Botanical Garden is also home to the first Chinese Scholar's Garden in the United States. This one acre garden is a superbly crafted example of Ming design and houses a collection of 18th and 19th century Chinese furniture. It is set in a Chinese
landscape of flowering trees and bamboo along with a variety of flora native to China.
